Airbus adds wings to new concept

It is very easy to make a helicopter faster and more effective in forward flight – some wings for more aerodynamic should be added along with propellers, like lateral rotors. That idea has been put into the Eurocopter X3 project. During the Paris Air show Airbus Helicopters released intentions to realize the concept under the name Rapid and Cost-Effective Rotorcraft, or simply Racer.

Racer has been developed under European Clean Sky 2 initiative. The prototype is considered as “the best trade-off between speed, cost-efficiency, sustainability and mission performance.”

After optimization the helicopter will have low acoustic level, while cruising speed will exceed 249 mph. It will carry two RTM322 engines for props and main rotor. Eco mode provides electrical stoppage of one of the engines for further restart during a flight, which reduces fuel consumption and expands the range.

The X3 will feature lightweight hybrid metallic-composite airframe.
The start of the final assembly is slated for 2019; the first flight to take place the following year.
