Rules of WRC (World Rally Championship)

The World Rally Championship is rally series, held by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) since 1973. The World Cup was preceded by a large-scale popular racing Tour de Corse and the RAC in 1972. In this sport, the WRC was the start of a new era as by coincidence Tour de Corse just saw leaving of a number of great cars, including Simca CG, Ligier JS2, Ford GT70, Ford Capri RS2600 and Peugeot 304 SLS. However, Lancia Stratos debuted in this tournament, but nonetheless, the emergence of new major championship attracted enough attention. In 1973 Mote Carlo witnessed about 300 cars and a lot of new names.

The preparation for the season begins several months before the start of the first stage. The Governing Body FIA (International Automobile Federation) approves routes, the stage and the final order of all rally stages around the world and gives the participants a copy of the regulations.

Two days are provided to get acquainted with special stages; one day is required to test equipment. The main rally event is held within 3 and rarely 4 days and it usually consists of 15-25 special stages.

The factory team puts up 2 cars and come to the venue of the rally at least one week before the start of the stage preparation. Cars will start racing in line with their place in the standing. It means that the leading pilot starts the first. There are usually 60 cars in the race, as along with the factory teams some private teams, racers of the Youth Cup with less powerful cars of another class or participants of manufacturer championships take part.

Before the competition is launched, the driver and navigator get acquainted with the trails. They usually pass on the special stage on a normal car on Tuesday and Wednesday before the competition days. The navigator notes details of the road peculiarities. For each special stage, it’s allowed to drive up to two times, the speed is limited under the rules of the road.
