Mystic Longyou Caves

In 1992 a citizen of a Shiyan Beicun village in China’s Longyou province started dewatering the village water pond willing to check his guess and satisfy curiosity. Wu Anai believed that the pond is of natural origin and endlessly deep as local people thought. He assured some locals to buy together a water pump and commenced dewatering. This is the beginning of the modern history of Longyou Caves and non-stop attempts to unlock their mysteries.

After 17 days, the water line decreased to open the flooded entrance into ancient artificial cave, which confirmed Wu Anai’s suspicion. Today this place is known as Longyou Caves – one of the most large scale underground excavations of the ancient times.

There are 24 hand-dug caves (10700 sq ft each). The ceiling of some caves reaches 98 ft, while the overall area of the caves exceeds 323000 sq ft. The artificial origin of the caves is proven by bolster marks on the walls. All these facts make Longyou Caves one of the unique places on the Earth.

Embossed works were made in a way to leave homogeneous samples of parallel coves. Similar marks were found on clayware dating 500-800 years AD in the neighboring museum.

The caves also have stairs, pillars and engraved figures. As experts estimate, Longyou Caves were excavated more than 2,000 years ago. It was taken away roughly 10763910 sq ft of hard rocks. The project is so massive that many people wonder how one of the most beautiful caves in the world had not been mentioned by historians and ancient travelers. Nevertheless, there is no information about Longyou Caves, though Ancient Chinese were meticulous in terms of history transferring for future generations. However, the excavation in Longyou was a monumental project and the caves still hold mystery.
