Warship concept – Dreadnought 2050
Back in 1906 HMS Dreadnought battleship was enlisted in the Royal Navy. With 12 in canon, high fire rate and other innovations, the Dreadnought naturally made all other ships out-of-date. Inspired by breakthrough design, the British Defense Ministry introduced its view of the Navy in 2050 (over 35 years) via the Dreadnought 2050 concept – automated warship equipped with lasers, ultrasonic missiles, high-tech composite body and 300-knots torps.

Dreadnought 2050 or T2050 is based on the special project by British scientists and engineers at Defense Ministry and Royal Navy and the 2015 International exhibition (DSEi), held on September 15-18. The DSEi was aimed at boosting imagination and creativeness for development of future military hardware.

Dreadnought 2050 is now concept on photos. If the project is realized someday, the warship will be 508 ft long and 121 ft wide, which will be similar to the Type 26 frigate size.

Dreadnought 2050 will have stealth surface and ultra-strong acrylic body, that will have semi-transparent mode to improve visibility. Another covering will be graphene to reduce face-to-face resistance and stabilize external skin. All three bodies will have ballast capacities that can be flooded to submerge the warship for hidden operation.

The Dreadnought will be moved by soft water jet, generated by electric or nuclear engine; the speed – some 50 knots, with unlimited range, depending on power source. For additional monitoring system, the warship can launch a quadcopter connected with the ship via carbon nano-pipes and equipped with lasers and multispectral sensors for detecting aircrafts and missiles.

On both sides the warship will have additional energy weapon and ultra-sonic missile launchers as well as missile-fast super-torpedos.

Meanwhile, the aft will have large, sliding flying deck for UAVs, built up on board via 3D printing. The deck can take two UAVs as well as a mid-sized helicopter.

It will have a special flooded deck for receiving weapons, UAVs, scuba systems, divers or marines.

There will be a railgun with firing range similar to the current winged missiles. Considering its hypersonic speed means that the targets will be hit by kinetic energy rather than explosive materials.
The key feature of the Dreadnought 2050 is special room for mission planning – command center. The warship will control all – air, water and space targets.

The room will be equipped with a 3D holographic table, providing all the required information. The visual image can be zoom-in or -out and rolled as the commander wants. Small displays will show certain targets.

The new technology will provide the commander with visual contact for thousands of miles and encrypted communication with NATO and UK headquarter and do not lose control over the battlefield. As a result, the number of required specialists can be reduced from 25 to 5. With such technologies, the crew can be decreased from 200 to 100 or even 50 people.

“While some of these technologies will expand the frames in the current science and techniques, there are no reasons why these elements cannot be used in the future projects,” said Muir McDonald, responsible for the StartPoint project. “Royal Navy needs new vision, innovative thinking and these shows the way to progressive technologies that can be purchased at lower price and require less workforce than all leading navy of the world now”.
